This painting depicts Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or more commonly known as Brittle Bones Disease. A person with this disease has weak bones that fracture easily due to half the normal amount of collagen. While researching for this piece I was inspired by old medical journals that doctors would fill with their observations, so the first layer on my canvas is torn paper. I found a book that had really old, golden pages and the color makes a good background and the text adds linear texture. Next I added the skeletons in pencil, charcoal, and a little acrylic for more intense white. The molecules are collagen and the section depicting Brittle Bones Disease has one, rather than two, collagen molecules to represent half the normal amount of collagen. To visually tie together the bottom skeleton, the single red collagen molecule, and the red set of dots in the bottom right corner, I used red. The red dots continue behind the bottom skeleton to include it in the Brittle Bones section. The dots represent bone density and I painted them in concentration structures that are very dense for the normal bone and considerably less dense for the brittle bones. One thing I plan to improve is the contrast in this piece, particularly on the skeletons - part of the problem is the light I took the picture in...I need to take another picture and maybe the contrast will be okay.

I think that once you bump up the contrast just a teeny bit like you said this piece will be perfect! There is tons of visual interest here with all of the dots and the molecules but I don't feel like it is cluttered at all. Just a tad more emphasis on the skeletons will do it, I think. I really like the color tones you've stuck with so far so it doesn't need to be any whiter... I would just darken your darks and maybe even give the skeletons a bit of a sketchy feel! Not sure how that would turn out too distracting though. Ahh well, nice job on this anyway!
ReplyDeleteI think it may just be my computer screen, but it took me a secound to find the skeletons. Contrast would be helpful in this piece, but i like the red pen you added. makes it feel antiquated.
ReplyDeleteLaura... I think this is one of your strongest piece this far. It really shows your drawing and design skills. I really love the way you devolved your background first. Maybe you could find some old text books or like x-rays for another project. Your pieces never cease to amaze me your style is so interesting!
ReplyDeleteI like how you used torn paper for a background and layered on top of it. I also like the skeletons and the composition.
ReplyDeleteLAURA! This might be my favorite one. I really like that you worked on top of the torn textbook pages. And I never saw it with the dots. They look great. I can definately see the skeletons but I do agree with Sarah that maybe some contrast would be good. Maybe if the whites stood out a little bit more on the skeletons? Great Job
